Occasionally, a vehicle arrives that isn’t quite what it seems—and those are the jobs where experience, process and the right tools really matter.
This Hyundai Santa Fe diesel met us in Bodmin, having travelled up from Plymouth, with what initially appeared to be a straightforward AdBlue countdown issue. On the surface, it looked like a routine fix. In reality, it turned into a perfect example of why proper diagnostics are essential.
OBD Connection Failure – When Things Don’t Add Up
Despite multiple attempts, we were unable to communicate with the ECU via the OBD port, something that immediately raised red flags. When this happens, our next step is always a bench read, allowing us to access the ECU directly.
Once removed, the ECU told its own story.
It had been marked in pen, a common sign that an ECU has been previously replaced or modified. After discussing this with the owner, they explained the vehicle had:
- Been in an accident
- Written off by insurance
- Possibly had an ECU replacement during repair
That was only part of the story.
The Real Issue – Incorrect ECU Fitted
During analysis, we discovered the ECU wasn’t even from a Santa Fe at all, but from a completely different Hyundai model.
This explained:
- The communication failure
- The AdBlue countdown fault
- Why previous attempts to resolve the issue had failed
Once the correct configuration was identified, the fix itself was straightforward—but only after the root cause was properly understood.

Why Experience Matters with Modern ECU Faults
Modern vehicles are increasingly complex, and issues like this cannot be solved with guesswork or generic tools. At Kernowsport, we invest heavily in:
- Advanced bench programming equipment
- Manufacturer-level ECU protocols
- Years of hands-on diagnostic experience
It’s also why we can resolve problems on vehicles that have:
- Been previously worked on
- Had accident repairs
- Undergone ECU swaps or coding changes

Problem Solved, Customer Back on the Road
Once everything was correctly identified and programmed, the AdBlue fault was fully resolved and the Santa Fe was returned to normal operation.
A tricky job—but a happy customer and a properly fixed vehicle.
If your car has warning lights, limp mode, or unresolved AdBlue issues—especially after previous repairs—we’re always happy to help.
