Another VW Transporter T5 and another holidaymaker helped this Sunday morning in St Austell, Cornwall. Jack, visiting from Southampton, was enjoying a few days in Kernow when his much-loved 2004 VW T5 began having EGR issues. Despite having an incredible 311,000 miles on the clock, the van still looked in great condition — more like one with half the mileage. Originally fitted with the 2.5 engine, this T5 produced an impressive 175BHP stock, and after a performance map earlier in its life, it was closer to 220BHP. Jack had already removed the EGR valve himself, but he needed Kernowsport to carry out the ECU EGR delete to finish the job properly. We were more than happy to help and get the van running at its best again. Jobs two and three today took us to North Country near Redruth for an interesting pair of vehicles — including our very first ice cream van! The first job was on a 2002 Ford Transit ice cream van fitted with the naturally aspirated 2.4-litre engine. While these older engines don’t offer huge tuning gains, we were still able to increase power from 75bhp to around 115bhp. Alongside the performance bump, we resolved a few engine management issues following an EGR delete, giving this hard-working van a new lease of life. The second job was a more familiar one — a Hyundai Tucson turbo diesel. This vehicle saw a gain of around 40bhp with a custom remap, transforming its acceleration and torque. The improvement in responsiveness was clear on the test drive, and the customer was extremely happy with the results. Most importantly, the ice cream van is now ready to hit the road again, just in time to serve customers at the local car boot sales and community events. This was the first of five remapping jobs we had booked in for the day, and it started with a last-minute request the evening before from Andy at Heron Refurbishing in Camborne. His Volkswagen Transporter T5 was in need of some serious help, struggling with hill performance when fully loaded — a common issue with the 102bhp models. We were happy to shuffle our schedule to fit him in first thing at his workshop in Troon. The van had just 133,000 miles on the clock and was in great condition, but it needed more power to keep up with the demands of daily commercial use. After carrying out a full diagnostic, we performed an EGR delete and applied a custom stage one performance remap. By the time we left, the van had gone from 102bhp to a much more capable 187bhp — a massive upgrade that Andy immediately felt. The improvement in torque and driveability was clear from the first test drive, especially on hills and when under load.
