Our customer from The Lizard had literally just picked up his new Audi A4 — and instead of heading home, drove half a mile down the road to meet us at Origin Coffee for a performance remap. That level of enthusiasm isn’t unusual for us — plenty of our customers have “ECU remap” on their to-do list right after buying a car — but what came next really surprised us. 🚗 Incredible Results from Audi’s 1.4 TFSI Engine We already knew that the 1.4 TFSI engine in the Audi A4 is a well-balanced unit. From the factory, it delivers a respectable 147BHP, and given its small capacity, we didn’t expect to see much more. But after applying our custom Stage 1 remap, we were shocked by the results: 💥 230BHP — from a 1.4-litre engine! That’s an incredible increase and well into the territory of Audi’s 2.0-litre models. This week at Kernowsport, we had the pleasure of tuning not one, but two BMW 1 Series Convertibles — both receiving our popular Stage 1 performance remap. The second of the two was this stylish BMW 118D Convertible located in Porthleven, just three doors down from a recent AdBlue delete we carried out for a local tradesman. We seem to be spending quite a bit of time in Porthleven lately — and we’re not complaining! It’s always a good excuse to stop by Origin Coffee, one of our favourite Cornish coffee roasters. ⚙️ Stage 1 Remap Results – More Power, More Driveability The BMW 118D already offers a solid balance of performance and efficiency, but our Stage 1 remap took things to the next level. After calibration, this 2.0-litre diesel was pushing over 180BHP, transforming the driving experience with noticeably improved throttle response, torque delivery, and smoothness. It’s amazing what a well-optimised ECU can do. The owner was thrilled with the extra punch and how much more responsive the car felt, especially on Cornwall’s hilly coastal roads. The first job of the day in Porthtowan was this brilliant little Fiat Abarth 595 1.4 Turbo, our very first of this specific model — though we’ve tuned dozens of other Fiats over the years. At Kernowsport, we always enjoy working on performance-oriented vehicles, and the Abarth range never disappoints. Small, light, and punchy, this little hot hatch has loads of potential — especially when paired with the right remap. ECU Tuning: When OBD Just Isn’t Enough While the Abarth 595 uses a relatively common Bosch ECU, it turns out it can’t be tuned via the standard OBD port alone. Instead, it requires what’s known as a bench method ECU modification, where the ECU is safely removed and connected directly to our professional tuning equipment. Although this might sound complex, it’s actually one of the safest and most reliable ways to work with an ECU. It allows us to create a complete backup before applying any performance changes — meaning the vehicle can always be restored to factory settings if needed. This BMW 220D Convertible was actually the fourth vehicle of the day in the same location, after word quickly spread that we were nearby. It’s not unusual for customers to stop us while we’re out and about in Cornwall to ask if we can help them too, and today was a perfect example of that. Transforming Performance with a Stage 1 Remap This stunning BMW 220D Convertible came to us in excellent condition and ready for a Stage 1 performance map. From the factory, the 2.0 diesel engine produces around 175bhp, but after tuning, we were able to take that up to an impressive 230bhp.
