Occasionally, a vehicle arrives that isn’t quite what it seems—and those are the jobs where experience, process and the right tools really matter. This Hyundai Santa Fe diesel met us in Bodmin, having travelled up from Plymouth, with what initially appeared to be a straightforward AdBlue countdown issue. On the surface, it looked like a routine fix. In reality, it turned into a perfect example of why proper diagnostics are essential. OBD Connection Failure – When Things Don’t Add Up Despite multiple attempts, we were unable to communicate with the ECU via the OBD port, something that immediately raised red flags. When this happens, our next step is always a bench read, allowing us to access the ECU directly. Once removed, the ECU told its own story. It had been marked in pen, a common sign that an ECU has been previously replaced or modified. After discussing this with the owner, they explained the vehicle had: That was only part of the story. The Real Issue – Incorrect ECU Fitted During analysis, we discovered the ECU wasn’t even from a Santa Fe at all, but from a completely different Hyundai model. This explained: Once the correct configuration was identified, the
